Storms

Storms and high winds can cause widespread disruption to power, internet and phone networks. Storms can be dangerous with risks such as fallen trees, power lines and flooding, which can also affect travel and communications and supply chains.

Local authorities respond to severe weather emergencies in each area. Keep up to date of weather warnings and stay indoors where advised.

Be aware
  • Keep up to date of weather warnings from Met Éireann.
  • Follow weather updates and warnings for your area.
  • Stay inside and keep away from windows in case of flying debris.
  • Avoid going near trees, walls or power lines as they can fall in strong winds.
  • Never drive through flooded roads because the water is deeper and faster than it looks.
  • Shelter in place during red warnings.
Be prepared
  • Keep a supply of non-perishable food on hand.
  • Rotate food based on expiry dates.
  • Consider dietary needs of family members and pets.
  • If you use baby formula, keep enough on hand.
  • Use fresh and refrigerated food first.

Power outages

Electricity

ESB Networks, who deliver electricity across Ireland, send teams to areas experiencing power outages due to extreme weather conditions. If you are experiencing difficulties with your power supply, check the ESB website for information on power outages and other updates.

  • If you see a fallen electricity wire, do not approach or touch it.
  • Call ESB Networks emergency service immediately at 1800 372 999 (+353 21 238 2410) or call the emergency services on 112 or 999

Gas

If you smell gas, call Gas Networks Ireland 24-hour emergency line immediately on 1800 20 50 50 and follow the steps below.

  • Ensure gas appliances are turned off and have not been left on and unlit.
  • Don't smoke, vape or use a naked flame.
  • Don't unplug or switch anything electrical on or off.
  • Open windows and doors.
  • If the smell persists turn off the gas at the meter - learn more on their safety page.
  • Call Gas Networks Ireland 24-hour emergency line on 1800 20 50 50 no matter who your gas supplier is.

Gas appliances may be affected during a power cut.

  • During a power cut, gas supplies and your gas meter should continue to operate as normal. Gas appliances, however, may be affected.
  • Although they operate by burning gas, most gas appliances rely on mains electricity for items such as pumps, fans, electronic controls and so on, so in the event of a power outage they may not operate until the power is restored.
  • When the power is restored, gas appliances should operate as normal, but some boilers may need to be reset. This is normally something that can be done by the customer themselves at the boiler control panel and some boilers have the resetting instructions visible on the boiler.
  • If the boiler or other appliances are not working after power has been restored and cannot be reset, find and contact Registered Gas Installer.
  • For more information, visit the Gas Networks Ireland website.
Water outages

Uisce Éireann is responsible for secure, safe, and sustainable water services in Ireland. If your water supply is interrupted, or you think there is a water leak in your area, report it to Uisce Éireann.

Check for updates on water supply issues, including outages or low pressure.

You can sign up for water service updates with Uisce Éireann’s Free Text Alert Service, which will notify you if there are any:

  • Planned water supply issues in your area.
  • Unplanned interruptions in your area.
  • Water quality events that last longer than 4 hours in your area.

For more advice, see the Loss of utilities page.

Stay Back, Stay High, and Stay Dry

  • Follow the Irish Coast Guard advice to ‘Stay Back, Stay High, and Stay Dry’ from all inland waterways and coastal regions during storms.
  • Stay back from cliffs and exposed coastal areas and piers where breaking waves can be hazardous.
  • If you see somebody in trouble on the water or along the coast, use Marine VHF Channel 16 or call 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
