Jonathan Buttimore is Advisory Counsel Grade I – Group C in the Office of the Attorney General. As a senior Advisory Counsel and Assistant Secretary General since 2017, he is responsible for leading one of the Office’s six specialist advisory groups and is recognised as a designated public official under the Regulation of Lobbying Act 2015.
Jonathan is a Barrister who joined the Office of the Attorney General as an Advisory Counsel in 2001. He acts as legal adviser to a wide range of Government Departments, including advising on the conduct of domestic and EU litigation and the preparation of legislation. This has included banking, defence, civil justice and agriculture issues. Since 2018 he has been the Director of the Secondment Programme for the Office of the Attorney General which supports the operation of In-House Legal Units in 14 Government Departments.
Before joining the Office in 2001, Jonathan practised for 5 years at the Law Library and is qualified as an Advocate in the Isle of Man where he worked for 2 years. Jonathan holds a BCL and LLM (European Law) from UCD. Jonathan is due to be awarded a Masters of Business Studies from UCC in September 2026.
