The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media are seeking to recruit a Keeper – Public Services and Collections in the National Archives of Ireland.
This is a senior management position within the National Archives working with the Director and senior management team to deliver on the strategic direction of the institution as well as contributing to the delivery of the statutory functions of the National Archives.
The duties of the Keeper–Public Services and Collections, National Archives in the Department will include but are not limited to, the following:
• Contribute to the overall strategic management and leadership of the National Archives
• Contribute to the development of policy in the National Archives in line with the overall strategic direction of the institution and to oversee implementation of a divisional work plan aligned to the overall strategy;
• Co-ordinate and monitor, in conjunction with Archives and Government Services, the preservation, care and storage of archives transferred under the National Archives Act and the consequential work;
• Co-ordinate and oversee all aspects of the public engagement work of the National Archives including public service provision including the operation of the reading room, reprographics and copyright services, education and outreach programmes, overseeing and developing user services through on-line platforms and expanding and developing the digital capacity of the National Archives public facing work both on-site and remotely;
• Develop the potential of the collections from a research, exhibition and data analysis perspective;
• Working with senior management, co-ordinate existing accommodation and off-site storage and support the return of all records currently off-site to Bishop Street on completion of the archive repository project;
• Working with senior management, co-ordinate disaster preparedness policies and procedures for collections including annual reviews, risk assessments, health and safety requirements as well as fire safety and security;
• Co-ordinate and monitor work in preservation and conservation and develop a strategy for specific work programmes annually in these areas in collaboration with external partners where appropriate;
• Initiate and manage digitisation projects aimed at improving access, creating more opportunities for the public, researchers and the academic world to engage with the National Archives collections, including contributing to and initiating external projects;
• Support and provide assistance to government departments, courts offices and bodies subject to the National Archives Act, 1986 to fulfill their obligations under the Act;
• Represent the National Archives on a range of bodies and with external stakeholders where appropriate;
• Any other duties as may be assigned by the Director of the National Archives.
