The Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin T.D., has today announced, on her nomination to Government, the Government’s approval to appoint Ms. Helen Shaw to the BAI’s Contracts Award Committee.
Ms. Shaw will serve for a three year term. The appointment followed a public call for applications on www.stateboards.ie and an assessment process. Ms. Shaw is a media/communications professional with over 30 years’ experience as both a practitioner and senior manager with a background and senior experience in governance and regulation.
Commenting on the appointment,
Minister Martin said: “I wish to congratulate Ms. Shaw and to wish her the very best during her term on the BAI’s Contracts Award Committee (CAC), I know Helen will bring a wealth of experience and contribution to this important role”.

Helen Shaw Bio
Helen Shaw is a media/communications professional with over 30 years’ experience as both a practitioner and senior manager with a background and senior experience in governance and regulation.
Ms Shaw ran RTE Radio as Head of Radio for five years (1997-2002) and also launched RTE lyric FM, the fifth full FM radio service on the Irish spectrum in 1999.
Ms Shaw set up Athena Media as a digital content and consultancy company in Sept 2003 and worked as an international consultant on several major projects including lead researcher and writer on the influential Ox Report on Radio Licensing (2004).
Through her radio and TV work, she has won various awards including a ‘Gold’ at the New York Radio Festival 2020 for the project Mother’s Blood, Sister. Through her involvement as a researcher and writer with DRACE (Digital Radio Cultures in Europe) pan European project, she contributed to the publication of the book Digital Radio in Europe (Intellect, 2010). As a digital futures consultant she has worked with the European Broadcasting Union and presented at EBU events and conferences as well as working within the Irish media market with key media players including the Irish Times.
Ms Shaw has a background and senior experience in governance and regulation. She worked for a short time with Comreg on regulation in broadcasting in Ireland and she is currently a member of the board of the Arts Council since Jan 2017 and operates as a committee member on the board in several committees including policy & strategy, business & finance. Athena Media does not have any current contracts or projects with the BAI and has no conflicts of interests with other media partners who would come under BAI contracts for licensing.
