The main aim of this research was to provide an overview of the existing mechanisms for applying for and achieving ethics approval for studies. Based on a multi method research project that included documentary review, stakeholder consultations and a postal survey, the report provides a summary of the key findings, in relation to Research Ethics Committees (REC), the REC landscape in Ireland at the time, ethical issues in children’s research and the ethics of children’s’ research in Ireland. It also identifies the implications for the ethics infrastructure arising from the review.
The Principal Investigator for this research was Dr Heike Felzmann-Schmidt of the Department of Philosophy, NUI Galway, who worked directly with post-graduate researcher Marian Ward and Sorcha Ni Chonnachtaigh.
