Authoristation to sell organic products from outside EU
Organic products from outside the EU can only be marketed once they conform to strict standards. All produce from third countries labelled as organic must conform to rules which cover all stages of production and processing. The Department issues authorisation to sell organic products from outside the EU when these standards have been met.
How to qualify
You need to be registered with the Department and an inspection must demonstrate your compliance with the rules in order to market imported organic products.
Some third countries operate production rules and inspection systems equivalent to those operating within the EU. The import of specified organic products from these countries
is allowed without prior approval once each consignment is accompanied by an inspection certificate. In these cases you do not need to complete the application form below.
Organic imports from other third countries can be marketed once the importer receives authorisation. Before authorisation is given, importers must demonstrate that:
• the product has been produced in accordance with production rules equivalent to those laid down by the EU
• the operators have been subject to control measures equivalent to those required by the EU
To obtain an authorisation, you must first complete the initial application form below. Authorisations will not be backdated or granted retrospectively, so it is important that you apply for authorisation well before goods are to be imported. The authorisation will be valid for 12 months.
Before any imported organic products from third countries may be cleared into free circulation in the EU, a certificate of inspection for import of products from organic production must be endorsed by the custom authorities of the EU member state.
