Given the ongoing situation in relation to energy prices and supply, there is now a concerted effort across the public sector to lead by example in lowering energy consumption and costs.
Delivered by the SEAI and the OPW, the Reduce Your Use energy efficiency initiative provides a structured programme of energy saving activities that public bodies can undertake during the winter months.
With over 350 public organisations, covering an estimated 12,000 buildings, the initiative is expected to support an energy saving of 5-10% across public sector operations, and up to 15% in public sector buildings.
The Initiative is focused on taking action in the short term and on implementing measures that will set our organisations on a pathway towards achieving their 2030 energy efficiency and decarbonisation targets.
Public sector organisations are now required to implement a number of energy saving measures, and develop processes to measure and track their progress. Measures include:
In some public sector settings, some measures are not possible or safe to implement. In these cases, public bodies are required to undertake alternative measures with an equivalent energy saving impact.
Given the significant energy challenges facing Ireland this winter, it is important we track and measuring progress as quickly as possible. To identify which actions are contributing to progress, or where additional support may be needed to speed up progression, we will be engaging with our public sector organisations early and often over the coming months.
Further information on progress achieved across the wider public sector, and details on specific activities undertaken will be available here shortly.
