Migration and Ireland

Ireland continues to see people enter and leave the country every year. Latest figures show an estimated 64,000 people emigrated from Ireland and 141,600 immigrated to Ireland (April 2023).

As a member of the European Union, Ireland participates in freedom of movement, which allows EU nationals to live and work here without the need for visas or work permits. The majority who move to Ireland from outside the EU apply for an immigration permission to work, live or study here.

Since February 2022 more than 105,000 people have arrived in Ireland as Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In 2023 approximately 13,000 people applied for International Protection (asylum) in Ireland.
