National Patient Safety Office

Established by the government in December 2016, the National Patient Safety Office (NPSO) focuses on leading key patient safety policy initiatives.

We aim to support high quality health services by using patient safety data, preparing legislation, promoting evidence-based clinical care and publishing reports about the performance of our health service. We also work to promote the proper use of antibiotics through our Antimicrobial Resistance policy.

The NPSO works closely with many different bodies and organisations across the country including the HSE and the Health Information and Quality Authority.

The NPSO also hosts an annual conference which provides a platform for discussion and presentation of key patient safety issues.

How we carry out our work

The NPSO has a team of five units which each focus on a different area of patient safety.
