The Department of Education is a lead sponsor of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE).

The BTYSTE inspires learners through hands-on, learner-led activities which can help improve attitudes to and understanding of STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) .

It provides an opportunity to complement the STEM learning that is provided through our schools. Through the STEM Education Policy Statement 2017-2026, the Department of Education aims to ensure that, from a young age, our learners are engaging with high-quality STEM experiences.

The Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition is running for almost 60 years and is based in the RDS, Dublin. It is a competition and educational experience for students who take part from all over the island of Ireland.

Various Government Departments and Agencies have had a presence at the Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition over the past number of years.

These include Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Teagasc, Met Eireann, Geological Survey Ireland, Central Statistics Office, Irish Aid in addition to Science Foundation Ireland, the Heritage Council and The National Parks and Wildlife Services.

Climate Action at BTYSTE

Tackling climate change through science and technology innovation is an important focus at this year's exhibition with 20% of the projects entered dealing with environmental issues across all STEM categories.

Learn more about the Government's Climate Action Plan 2023 here.

Health, new technologies, agriculture and sport science are also among the strong trends which have emerged from the entries.
