Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Senator Pippa Hackett, today announced the opening of a public consultation process on the new strategic plan for the development of the Organic Sector. The consultation process will be open for a seven-week period from Monday 10 July 2023 to Friday 18 August 2023.
Referring to the proposed consultation, the Minister said:
“This is an opportunity for all stakeholders and members of the public to contribute to the development of a new strategic plan for the development of the Organic Sector. The government is focused on reaching 10% of all land farmed organically by 2030. The strategy will incorporate sectoral and cross sectoral recommendations, market developments, training and education, public awareness and wider EU policy. It is critical that stakeholders have their views considered in developing this strategy which aims to build on the recent expansion of the sector and provide clear direction for further growth of the Organic Sector towards 2030.”
The Organic Sector Strategy Group, which was re-established by Minister Hackett in 2022 and chaired by Padraig Brennan, is tasked with developing this strategy for the development of the Organic Sector for the period up to 2030.
It is expected the Organic Sector strategy will be presented to the Minister in the first quarter of 2024.
Padraig Brennan, Chair of the Organic Strategy Forum commented:
“As the Organic Strategy Forum sets out to develop a new strategic plan for the organic sector, it is important to fully understand the views and asks of all interested stakeholders. The public consultation provides an opportunity to capture those views, which will help drive the direction of the strategic plan for the Minister and her department to support the anticipated growth in Irish organic food supplies over the period to 2030.”
Written submissions should be sent by email to organicstrategy@agriculture.gov.ie or by post to the Organic Unit, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Johnstown Castle Estate, Co. Wexford. The deadline for receipt of submissions is 18 August 2023.
A consultation notice will be published on the department’s website from Monday 10 July 2023 at the following address: https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/fc7c8-organic-farming/
