Adoptive Leave is granted to teachers who are adopting mothers or sole male adopters, commencing on the date of placement of the child with the adopting teacher.
It consists of a period of 24 consecutive weeks statutory paid leave and up to a maximum of 16 consecutive weeks statutory additional unpaid leave. A teacher may also apply for non-statutory additional Unpaid Adoptive Leave until the end of the school year i.e. 31st August.

A teacher must complete the Application Form at Appendix A and submit it to his/her employer at least 6 weeks prior to the planned commencement date.
Adoptive leave is a statutory leave of absence from employment for special needs assistants who are adopting parents.
All adoptive parents have an entitlement to 24 consecutive weeks adoptive leave, plus the option to avail of an additional period of 16 weeks unpaid adoptive leave.

Special needs assistants must complete the application form at Appendix A and return it to their employer at least six weeks in advance of commencement of the leave.
