Adoptive Leave is granted to teachers and special needs assistants who are adopting mothers or sole male adopters. The leave starts on the date of the child's placement with the adopting teacher.
It consists of a of 24 consecutive weeks statutory paid leave and up to a maximum of 16 consecutive weeks statutory additional unpaid leave. A teacher may also apply for non-statutory additional Unpaid Adoptive Leave until the end of the school year, 31 August.
