Parental Leave is a period of statutory unpaid leave available to a teacher for the purpose of caring for his/her child.
A teacher is entitled up to a maximum of 26 weeks Parental Leave in respect of each child up to the age of 13 years or the age of 16 years in the case of a child with a disability/long-term illness.
For further information, please refer to the Parental Leave Scheme contained in Circular 0054/2019 titled ”Leave Schemes for Registered Teachers employed in Recognised Primary and Post Primary Schools”.
A teacher must complete the Application Form at Appendix A and submit it to his/her employer at least 6 weeks prior to the planned commencement date.

An SNA is entitled up to a maximum of 26 weeks Parental Leave in respect of each child up to age of 13 years or the age of 16 years in the case of a child with a disability/long-term illness.

An SNA must complete the Application Form at Appendix A in 0027/2013 and submit it to his/her employer at least 6 weeks prior to the planned commencement date.

Staff are entitled to 18 weeks parental leave in respect of each child up to age of 13 years and 16 years in the case of a child with a disability. There is no obligation however to take the full 18 weeks leave.

Clerical Officers and Caretakers must complete the application form at Appendix A attached to Circular 0006/2015 and return to their employer at least six weeks in advance of commencement of the leave.
